What line of study should I go into to become a stock broker?

future firm
daniel d asked:

I would like to get into brokerage, and am currently going to start school to finish my B.A in finance. Am I headed in the correct direction? I am also interested in commodities and future securities. What is a recomeded degree program that will help me break into the lucrative field of brokerage and help me get into a good firm?

A stock broker is a sales job. A brokerage would prefer an experieced car salesman over someone with a finance PhD. It’s more important to enjoy selling and to have numerous contacts with wealthy people. Keep in mind that the figures reporting average broker salaries in excess of $100K have a survivorship bias. Brokers are either wildly successful or get fired. There isn’t much room for being in between in that business.

    Good luck.

I used to have a part-time job that paid my way through college working for two brokers.

Education does not matter as much as sales skills. Its a relationship selling strategy. People skills and an understanding of portfolio theory are prime requisites in this field.

The two I worked for, one had a BA is Psych, and the other a Masters in Science. My friend in the industry has a BA in economics.
