Is it ok to use a potential future employer as a reference? I.e. the person who will be interviewing you?

future firm
Victor Y asked:

I do work as an outside consultant. A position has opened up within a firm I have worked with extensively. I’d like to use their Director as a reference but she is also the person who will be interviewing me and deciding if I’m fit for the job. Is this ethical? She is well aware of my past work and can speak very positively for what I’ve done.

nope- its unprofessional…. sorry- but the idea is that she gets a refernce from someone other than her….. but it looks like you’ll get the postion anyway so congrats!!!

It is not a good idea to use the person conducting an interview for a reference. I would find others to use as a reference.

That would look really weird, since the purpose of a reference is to give contact info for the interviewer to talk to someone about your qualifications. What would she do, talk to herself?
