No, a L-1 visa is not a catch-all visa for any purpose that you might like to pursue in the U.S. The L nonimmigrant classification was created to permit international companies to temporarily transfer qualified employees to the United States for the purpose of improving management effectiveness, expanding U.S. exports, and enhancing competitiveness in markets abroad.

An L-1 visa valid for only one year is almost always issued for a qualified employee coming to or to open a new office. The L-1 visa holder is one who seeks to enter the United States temporarily in order to continue to render his services to the same employer, and only the employer who petitioned for him.

No. Once your visa expires you will have to return to India

No .. L1 is only used to tranfers within the same corporation (like being transfered from, for example, Sony/Japan to Sony/USA). It was created to make these internal transfer easier.

If you get laid off, or decide to quit your job, you have to go home. If you want to move to another job, apply for a Green Card (sponsored by the same copany that gave you the L1) or get a H1 visa.

==> a correction omn the info gave by the first guy: L1 visas are valid for up to 3 years, and can be renewed for 2 more year (total is 5 years)
