I believe the outlook for accountants is good. Why?
1. Global financial systems are becoming more complex and important all the time.
2. Even before today’s financial crisis, the US government began imposing stricter regulations on companies, their accountants, and their auditors. (Sarbanes-Oxley, etc.)
The future is going to need more accountants to handle these tasks.
I’d guess the accounting field will be a good one for the forseeable future. You have the Sarbanes Oxley law plus most likely some new laws coming out of the current financial mess and that all creates more stuff for accountants to do, plus more opportunities for forensic accountants to search for all the corporate wrongdoings. Additionally, companies need to get audited, do their taxes and submit financial statements no matter how the economy is doing, so accounting is a pretty stable profession.
