Listing previous job experience risking future job?

Im applying for a job but im afraid of putting previous job experience because i left on bad terms. I feel that if they contacted my previous employer it would hurt my chances for getting the job. Is it better to leave previous job experience blank or list it anyway? My previous job was retail but the job im applying for is not retail.

I left my job of 5 years on bad terms. What do I tell my future employers when I don’t have any references?

Some recommend going back to school but I see that as running up more debt in a lot of cases.Others state you should start your own business. But that is much easier said than done!
